Fishing the Past From the Disposal

Our friend Cerpts over at the Land of Cerpts and Honey blog recently posted about things he remembered from his childhood but are gone now. It touched me so much that I began to think about my childhood and things that are not there anymore. Things like the Ellisburg and the Berlin Circles, both of which are now just memories but I can tell you I drove around both of them many times. In fact, I almost died on the Berlin Circle when I was dating a girl with very bad timing. Soon, another circle, the Marlton Circle, will join them and it too, will also be gone.

Now the Marlton Circle is the location of the place where I got my first job. Wait, I’m getting a little ahead of myself. My “first” job was working at Big John’s Steaks but I’m not counting that for the sake of this story for two reasons. Big John’s is still there on Route 70 in Cherry Hill as it was back in the early 80’s. It doesn't have the same owners (Big John had lost the restaurant to a gambling debt I understand and then he became sick and unfortunately died a short time ago), but it is definitely the same building. I recently went there to get a cheese steak in my belly and some nostalgia in my eyes. A woman who was a waitress when I worked there was still there. I had not seen her in at least twenty-five years but surprisingly enough, she remembered me. I guess I just have one of those faces. When I worked at Big John’s I was paid under the table and was 12 when I first started so I wasn’t on the books. That’s the other reason I won’t count that as my first job. My first night working there was Christmas Eve -1980, and there I would work until the spring of 1985 when I would begin working at the Marlton Rustler. The building at the top of the picture on the right hand side (a few pictures down) is the actual Rustler I worked at. The picture was take din 1974. At Rustler, not only did I collect my first ever “official” (as far as the IRS was concerned) paycheck, but I also met my first real best friend that I would ever have.

I grew up in a part of southern New Jersey back in the 70’s that at the time was a very rural area. Construction has changed that so much that I guess it would be considered more of a suburban area now. I grew up on a farm where we raised mostly “Joisey” tomatoes and sweet corn. We also had pigs and chickens and I worked my butt off in the “garden” which is what we called the fields where we grew our crops. For most of my childhood a great deal of time from March until October of every year was spent working and learning how to plow, cultivate, rake, hoe, seed, fertilize, and so many other things that are required to know in order to grow tomatoes, peas, beans, corn, et al.

On warm summer days when my aunt and uncle decided it was too hot to work in the fields, we would get our bicycles out of the garage and we would head up to the ice cream stand that was about a mile down route 73 towards Berlin. If I was really lucky, not only would we get ice cream but my aunt would spring for us to also play some miniature golf on the course that was connected to the ice cream stand. The ice cream stand and the miniature golf course are both just memories now. There is a small Mom and Pop garden center where you can get flowers for Easter and other holidays as well as buy your Christmas tree there today. They will even flock one for you if you want that fake snow crap on it. The original Mom and Pop that ran it are long gone, they were old even when I wasn’t!

(this is the picture of the Marlton Circle with Rustler at the top right of the picture)

The Marlton Circle is where a long time ago, a girl named Leslie, drove around it going the WRONG way! Changed are the buildings. Today, no longer is Olga’s Diner next to Fayva Shoes. Next to Fayva was Gino’s and then there was the Rustler. Right next to Rustler was Commerce Bank which is the first bank that I had an account with in my adult life. I had a savings account and Christmas Club that my grandmother had set up for me when I was younger at a Horizon bank which was later renamed Farmers and Mechanics and is now a Beneficial bank in Berlin, but Commerce is where I got my first bank account for myself. A woman that we all called “Pointy Tits” worked there. I guess you can figure out why we called her that, I think we worked with her son at Rustler, but I don‘t remember for sure. I do know she used to come in for lunch at Rustler a lot. Eventually, Fayva gave way to Colored Tile and Gino’s was replaced by Pizza Hut. All of those are gone and Barnes & Noble stands there now.

Long before I became a mall rat in my high school years, I used to go to the Echelon Mall with my grandmother and aunt. Occasionally after shopping we would stop off at the Cow Tail Bar which was a small restaurant that was attached to a dairy farm. The dairy farm is still there, as far as I can tell, but the restaurant is long gone. In it’s place is a Wawa which has one of the most frustrating parking lots I have ever had the displeasure of parking in. At every table at the Cow Tail Bar when you sat down was a small box of pretzels on the table for you to either enjoy right away or to save and have them with your ice cream. There was a box for everyone. The ice cream was the reason everyone came to the Cow Tail Bar. As it was attached to a dairy farm, the ice cream was therefore made on site and it was always so cold and so hard. It even had small pieces of ice still stuck right in the ice cream. It was some of the best ice cream around then and still to this day most of the ice cream I eat pales in comparison. I remember my regular treat was called The Clown. It consisted of two dips of chocolate ice cream (I had my choice on the flavor but they didn’t have a thousand flavors to choose from back then so it was an easy choice) some whip cream, the obligatory cherry, and a sugar cone stuck on top to make it look like a pointy clown hat. If I was feeling extra adventurous I would ask for some powdered malt topping as well. Not only is the Cow Tail Bar gone, but half of the Echelon Mall is as well!

During the summers I got to spend weekdays with my grandmother while my aunt and uncle were at work. One of our favorite places to go was to Grants in Clementon. Grants was a bargain store not unlike the Wal-Marts/K-Marts/Targets of today. We would go shopping and we would stop off at the Grants Luncheonette which was a small restaurant inside of the store. I remember having breakfast with Santa there at Christmas time and we would have a stack of pancakes with the Easter Bunny in the spring. My favorite lunch was the grilled cheese sandwich with fries and a Coke. My grandmother was a big fan of the chicken club sandwich. Speaking of food and places you can go to get something to eat inside of a store, I remember getting a box of Super Pretzels (you could get like five for two bucks back then) and a raspberry flavored Icee at the K-Mart snack bar. That was one of the best Saturday snacks a kid could have after watching cartoons and wrestling all morning and Dr. Shock all afternoon! I do remember the K-Mart having a small restaurant, however I don’t remember ever having actually gotten anything to eat there myself. Doesn’t matter anyway, for you see, you can’t get anything to eat inside of a K-Mart anymore. At least nothing prepared ahead of time for you, that is. Grants was eventually bought by Woolworths and Wilcos and although they left the store almost the same way it was when it was Grants, the food didn’t seem the same. I don’t remember the name of the lady that my grandmother and I always thought of as our “usual” waitress but she didn’t make the change from Grants to Woolworths either. Below is an actual picture of the Grants in Clementon circa 1976.

Another spot that my family and I would frequent when I was a wee lad was the Berlin Farmers Market. Sister to the Pennsauken Mart, it is still open for business, unlike the Pennsauken Mart. It was a Sunday outing for all of us when we would pile into my uncles pick up truck and my aunts green Maverick, (the truck was in case we got anything too big to cart home in the car) and “walk out back of the sale”. There was the outdoor flea market that we would check out first and then we made our way inside. The barber shop in the market was where I got most of my haircuts during my childhood. I remember vividly how my uncle and grandmother complained when the price of a haircut went up from $4.50 to $5.00. The fifty cent difference was, of course, taken out of the barbers' tip, because "five dollars for a haircut was a rip off", and they both felt very strongly about this. I think my uncle pays double that now for a hair cut, and yes, he still goes “to the sale” for them. Give him a break he is getting close to 70 and old habits, well you get the picture.

Some other things that are gone that I want to add here but not get into any long stories about are Richmond’s Ice Cream Parlor, Nichol's Department Store, Crazy Eddie’s, J.M. Fields, Two Guys, Jefferson Ward, Bradlees, and the $.99 movie theater that was next to the Echelon Mall. While I’m talking about movie theaters, I want to talk about the Atco Drive-In for a minute. It was in every way the classic drive-in that you have seen in movies. Of course in order for you to have seen one of them in a movie, the movie would have had to take place prior to the 1990’s for the most part because most of the drive-ins were gone by then. Atco was a two screen drive-in so you would have your back facing the opposite screen when you parked to watch whatever movie you came to see. My uncle and his girlfriend (whoever she was at the time) would take us to see The Apple Dumpling Gang, or whatever other kiddies’ movie was showing that week. That alone was a pretty cool experience seeing Don Knotts on that huge screen, but it was always the other screen I was interested in. On the screen behind me they were usually playing the scary pictures. Of course they were also usually rated "R" and there was noting like watching Bambi trying to stand up on his shaky legs for the first time and being able to turn around and seeing some naked girls boobs get splashed with blood in Satan’s Cheerleaders which was playing right behind me. Good times!

I don’t play with Shrinky Dinks anymore, but it’s good to know they still make them if I really wanted to. I don’t raise Sea Monkeys anymore either but it’s good to know I could if I ever got the urge to. I do still read comics and watch wrestling on TV (Monday nights now instead of Saturday mornings) like I did when I was ten years old. I don’t play with Hot Wheels nor do I collect Matchbox cars but I could if I wanted to because they still make them. Not everything from our childhood still exists. It can't but we don't know that at the time and no matter how much we are told that it is all going to change as we grow up, you don't appreciate it until it's too late. I can’t go to Grants to get a Grilled Cheese sandwich anymore and who knows, it might not be as good of a grilled cheese sandwich as I remember. I do make a pretty mean grilled cheese myself these days after all. I haven’t been able to get a grilled cheese at Grants for nearly thirty years, but it would be nice to. Just one more time. And it would be nice if I got to take my grandmother with me. My treat this time.

More Updates!

Thanks to Dark UFO and fellow LOST blogger over at http://www.hawaiiweblog.com/ we have new pictures and a nice video for you today. First the pictures:

Not sure who the man is with Sawyer inside the SUV.

This looks to be a different scene to me; notice Sawyer has on different clothes than in the previous photo. I also don't think this is the same car as in the previous photo. The window, door, and side mirror all look different even though it is the same color.

Sawyer and Miles getting last minute instructions before filming a scene.

Sawyer and Miles in the car together. Notice the keypad lock and door handle under window. Different from the first picture. That man in the first picture is NOT Miles as some people have reported. The man in this picture here is Miles.

In this picture I am still trying to figure out if Sawyer looks like he was recently in a fight as I think I spot some redness on his nose and cheek. There was also a report that Sawyer was filming a fight scene before this scene. That has not been confirmed as of yet but this photo helps to make it believable.

Now here is a crash scene being filmed:

So what did we just see? Well apparently that is the same car Miles and Sawyer are sitting in as they are talking as seen in the above pictures. Reports say that after the crash, a woman is seen running from the blue car as Miles and Sawyer give chase. Miles was spotted wearing a badge so it is a possibility he is a cop or detective of some sort. Things get a little sketchy here but it is possible that both Miles and Sawyer are police officers of some sort and as in their Dharma days they are also partners in this reality.

The reports go on to say that the woman that exits the car and runs down an alley was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt. Who was in the blue hooded sweatshirt you may ask. Well, people claim to have seen Evvie Lilly wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt around town.

Filming Update

The filming report that I was waiting to confirm has now been confirmed and it brings with it some of the better spoilers I have received so far for the new season. First up though is a picture I found hiding on my computer of Jack outside of the airport filming scenes for the season premier:

Now for the newest new stuff - Alan Dale, or as we know him better, Charles Widmore, was spotted at the U.S.S. Bowfin Submarine Museum which is next door to the U.S.S. Arizona visitors center. Filming took place on and inside of a submarine possibly doubling as the Galaga that we had seen before.

As reported earlier, they are currently filming the seventh episode of the season; titled "Recon". So thanks to Juliette, a rock, and a little bomb it would appear that Sawyer is back to his old tricks. Hence the title Re Con. Course correction can be such a bitch! That still doesn't answer the question why Sawyer is on a submarine with Charles Widmore?

Tread carefully now because here there be spoilers. The new season will unfold in a way it never has before. We are going to see what I will label as "flash sideways" for lack of a better term for them. (cue movie preview voice over guy) In a world where Oceanic Flight 815 doesn’t crash, how much success has Widmore had in his hunt for the island? Could it be possible that Widmore never lost control over the island in this reality? Is your head hurting yet? It gets worse. Read on if you dare.

Not only was Josh Holloway seen filming at the sub but he was also spotted filming scenes in a restaurant where he was dressed rather nicely. He was seen talking to someone on the phone and some dialogue was overheard. Sawyer gets directions as what to do next from the person on the phone. Who is on the phone, Widmore? Apparently Sawyer is at the restaurant to meet a woman and he is supposed to con her into giving him information on how to get to our fabled LOST island. He tells the woman he wants "on the boat" and that he knows she was on the island when she was a child. Have you guessed who we are talking about yet? Yes, Josh was filming scenes with Rebecca Mader or as we knew her better, the red-headed polar bear carcass fondler named Charlotte.

This is gonna get confusing!

A New Day To Get LOST

It was announced today by ABC that LOST will premier early 2010 on Tuesday, February 2. That's right LOST will be airing for the first time in it's history on Tuesday nights. Not sure how this will go over with the faithful viewers who were accustom to watching LOST on either Wednesday or Thursday nights. Doing the quick calculations sets the series finally date as May 18. If they decide to do a recap/clip show, like they seem to love to do, or it has been mentioned the show may take a week off for the Olympics, and if either of these things occur it would push the finale back to May 25.

Now one other thing I can confirm are some episode titles that have been for the beginning of the season:

Episode 1: "LA X"
Episode 2: "What Kate Does"
Episode 3: "The Substitute"
Episode 4: "Lighthouse"
Episode 5: "Sundown"
Episode 6: "Dr.Linus"
Episode 7: "Recon"

The way the flashes are rumored to be constructed this season is that they are in the same order they were in during season 1. Meaning that the season premier is not dedicated to any one character this season as it was back in 2004. The second episode is a Kate episode, number three would be Locke-centric, followed by Jack for the "Lighthouse" episode. "Sundown" is an interesting title in that it reminds me of "Lockdown" from season three (I believe) when Locke was trapped under the blast door inside the hatch when it went into lock down mode. Could this foretell an injury to Sun? Or even worse? The next episode in season one was "The Moth"; the Charlie cave-in episode, but since Charlie is no longer on the show a Ben episode, "Dr. Linus", takes it's place. Episode seven is also a Sawyer episode in season 6 as it was in the first season. Filming reports on "Recon", which is being filmed as I type this, are mind blowing to say the least. When I know more and can confirm what I have been told, I shall post it.

DHARMA Lady

While being sick and not really feeling like doing anything productive, I have managed to go through some old folders on my computer. Buried deep in my unused items folder, I found a few pictures I never had the chance to use on the blog. So this here is sort of like "bonus material" from last season.

What we have here is the fictional "original draft" of DHARMA Lady. Written at The Gryphon Hotel by Geronimo Jackson front man Keith Strutter. Notice the mention of the DeGroots. Looks like there is a meeting scheduled for 8:15. Either the Degroots live at 108 Clifford Place in the Excelsior District or maybe that's just a building where the meeting take place. I wonder if that is an address on the island? Would be cool if it was.

This is the same poster that appeared in the cafeteria in Dharmaville where Hurley was the chef. Look close and you can make out several instances of the "numbers". Of course the Alice in Wonderland theme is continued through the poster. The German words at the bottom look like "offine turin" (whatever that means), also I can make out "Deutsch & Staatsoper(?)". Not sure what it says under that. Anyone familiar with the German language have any help?

Better yet, you have any Tami flu?

This Weeks "Musically LOST"

Before we get to our weekly musical number (hey, is this blog turning into a Variety Show?) I have this picture for you:

Not sure why it's so damn small but what it appears to be is Jeff Fahey (Frank Lapidus) walking along the beach between scenes with Ken Leung (Miles). This could just be two actors walking and talking between scenes and they are not together in any actual scenes together or they are walking together to a scene or from a scene that they just shot or are about to. The latter explanation would point to the fact that Jacob's statement"they're coming" did indeed refer to Jack, Sawyer, and company coming back to the 2007 time line. We can only wait and see.

Now onto our musical interlude: This week we subject for your approval "Happytown" by the late Dave Carter.

One other thing, season six has been expanded again. It is now 18 hours spread over 16 weeks. Another little bit of info is that this season will be laid out similarly to season 1. Meaning that the flashes (be they forward, back, or dare I say it - sideways?) will be in the same order as they were in season 1. Not sure what they are going to do for the characters that had flashes in season one who are no longer with us, perhaps that is why so many are coming back for this season. The "reset" is a huge player this season; the "game changer" if you will - one more time.

Musically LOST

This week we are going to try and return to a more regular format as I am bringing back the musical interlude part of the blog. Here we have Ben Linus mashed up with Simon and Garfunkel.

Less than three months until the final season premiers.

Transmissions

We have adjusted our communication satellites and I am happy to report that we were able to receive a new transmission from the island. Here are some photos taken from the latest filming that has been completed.

Yunjin Kim enjoys a cup of coffee between scenes. Notice she is dressed in the same clothes as we saw her in at the end of last season.

Ilana ushers Ben around at gun point. Again, this appears to be very soon after the end of season 5, although it was night when we left off and it is day here.

Upon close inspection you can see Ben and Ilana as well as Frank Lapidus (Jeff Fahey), who has been described by TPTB as having a larger part in season 6 than he has in the past. Deservedly so might I add.

Ethan (William Mapother) was spotted filming scenes with Kate and a very pregnant Claire at what doubled as a LA hospital. He is addressed by a coworker as "Dr. Goodspeed". Boone was also spotted on the island, but sadly no pictures. So far Maggie Grace (Shannon) is the only ex-Lostie who was asked to come back and has yet to give an answer.

Another "new" DHARMA van was spotted back on the island. I want one of these by the way so if you know of anyone selling one at a reasonable price, let me know!

Doctor Jack spotted filming scenes (that appear to be off island) driving that same damn p.o.s brown jeep-like thing.

This picture and the next are the two most interesting pics I have received so far because this could be either on the island or off, I'm not really sure. One thing is for sure it would appear that Jack is supposed to be kicking in a door, or it at least appears that way to me. Also, is it me or does Jorge Garcia look like he has gained a few pounds since last season?

A very sweaty Jack and Hurley either just prior or just after the previous picture. Still no clue where this is although it could be the base of the statue. Any guesses?

Jack's piece of shit jeep again! And, excuse me, but why doesn't he drive something nicer than this since he is a neurosurgeon after all? Not sure why it's parked in front of a school.

Hurley's orange Hummer makes a return and yes, that is John Locke in a wheelchair near the Hummer.

Hurley and Locke film a scene together.

The new season begins January 20Th and it is confirmed that the show will take a two (at least but possibly three) week hiatus during the winter Olympics which are to take place at the beginning of February. It was also announced that the season, which was originally planned to be 16 hours is now 17 hours.
