Round 2 Begins

Here we are again folks for the second round of the gargantuan fight that spans the entire DC Comics Multi verse. Hero versus Hero in a fight for supremacy. Just who is the best of the best? We got some dooseys for you tonight. Let's get started with:

Martian Manhunter

Versus

Black Lightning

Two Justice League members go at it hard and heavy in our first battle of the night. J'onn Jonzz keeps trying to reason with his opponent and it's easy for all to see that he is holding back. Perhaps not the best idea. Blast after blast of white hot lightning is hurled at the Manhunter from Mars as he continues to fade in and out of visibility. Black Lightning tells J'onn to stop holding back, "Is this how your wife and daughter would have you fight?" he asks. Manhunter is jolted into a rage as the mere mentioning of his departed family causes him intense emotional pain. Now the fight really can start. These guys are tearing each other apart now. Whoever wins; I don't know how he will have anything left to go on to the next round. Lightning shows signs of weakening as he has spent an incredible amount of energy blocking the rays from J'onzz's "Martian Vision (similar to Superman's heat vision). J'onzz pulls out his final ace as he uses his mental powers to "short circuit" Black Lightnings powers. After a horrendous battle we have declared a winner by TKO - Martian Manhunter.

If that is the first fight what can we expect from the remaining fights? Let's move on as our heroes are entering the arena. Next up:

Captain Marvel

Versus

Plastic Man

Once again we have two heroes that have at one time or another been members of the Justice League. The worlds mightiest mortal versus the worlds bendiest mortal. It only takes Marvel a few minutes to tie Plastic Man into knots. Winner by submission - Captain Marvel.

Quickly moving on:

Nightwing - Dick Grayson

Versus

Steel - John Henry Irons

The former sidekick turned headliner against the substitute Man of Steel. Luckily for Nightwing John Henry Irons isn't Superman. Unfortunately for Nightwing, Dick Grayson isn't Batman. John Henry Irons swings a mean hammer. Nightwing is good and holds his own fairly well in the beginning. He's not the former leader of the Teen Titans and the Outsiders for nothing. Steel's not perfect, in fact in the super hero world Steel is almost a rookie. Nightwing uses this to his advantage and is able to even begin possibly winning the fight. Superior hand to hand combat training allows Nightwing to stay in this fight a lot longer than most would give him hope for. Grayson is good at what he does and part of what he does is know when he is in over his head. He folds his hand giving us our winner by TKO Steel.

Our next battle is the first Female Fury Battle of the second round.

Supergirl

Versus

Mary Marvel

This is a battle for the ages. If we were doing females only this could be the championship match. Here we go and if you noticed Mary is dressed in black this time. Due to Eclipso whispering evil into Mary's ear and Black Adam giving her the total of his power, Mary is mightier than she has ever been. No need to put any gimmicks into this match, they could very easily fight to the death. Supergirl is surprised just how strong Mary is as Mary begins to really pour it on. Supergirl is having a hard time as Mary connects with lightning bolts one after the other and it sends Kara Zor El hurling through space. Supergirl has incredible resiliency and is able to take a beating, lucky for her. Mary Marvel is giving Supergirl everything she has and astonishingly enough Supergirl is taking it. In fact Supergirl is starting to make a come back. Supergirl appears at to be even more powerful than Superman. Superman has spent a lifetime subconsciously suppressing his powers so that he doesn't hurt the people around him, while Kara, without such experience, simply uses her powers to the fullest without being as fearful of risks to others. And is she ever. Mary is down! Mary is down! Mary is down! This one goes down as the most closely contested fight of the tournament yet! Winner by knockout and what a knockout she is - Supergirl.

In Darkest Night ...

We have the green light to go ahead with the final matches of the first round of competition. I know it's almost St. Patty's Day but that's not why the sky is tinged a curious shade of green. What's causing all of this? Well, read on and see the battles we have laid out for you tonight.



First up:

Green Lantern Kyle Rayner

Versus

Donna Troy (Wonder Girl)

Well this is interesting. They are both former Titans and they dated for a while. Rayner is the latest hero to sport the power ring worn by Green Lanterns before him. He is also the youngest Lantern. The constructs he makes with his ring is said to be the most elaborate if not the strongest of all Lanterns from the fact that he is an artist by trade and puts a lot of creativity in his rings power. For a short while he reached Godhood when the Guardians of the Planet Oa merged him with the Lanterns power battery that charges all of the Lanterns rings. For this brief period he was known as Ion and was even more powerful than ever. That power has since been rescinded and he is now back to being an Honorary Green Lantern (meaning he has no space sector to patrol as most other Lanterns do). Donna Troy is one of the original founding members of the Teen Titans. Her origin story has changed over the years due to the different "Crisis" that she has lived through. Unlike other heroes, she has the ability to remember all the different versions of herself and is therefore a living link in the DC Multiverse. She is Wonder Woman's younger sister. During the real Wonder Woman's recent year long absence Troy was Wonder Woman. The new origin is that she is a clone created from the blood of Wonder Woman, Diana Prince. Prince was an only child growing up and since she had no one to play with, the Gods of Olympus decided to make her someone to play with and decided a mirror image of the future Wonder Woman would be the best match. She appears younger than Wonder Woman since from the day Diana Prince left her home and no longer played with Donna she stopped aging. She did not begin to age again until after leaving her home on Paradise Island and entering "Man's Land" as the Amazon's refer to our reality. She is a younger duplicate of Wonder Woman for all tense and purposes. Well that took way too long to write. In fact, while I was doing it, DC changed her origin again. Oh and Donna Troy also got her butt kicked by Kyle Rayner. Winner by decision - Green Lantern

Moving on -

Green Lantern Guy Gardner

Versus

Lobo

OK, now that's just rude and I just noticed it's also in Spanish. Oh well. Guy Gardner - Green Lantern - anti hero taking on Lobo - universal bounty hunter - anti hero. As the first "alternate" Green Lantern, Guy Gardner is the "macho, red blooded American male" he claims to be. To the extremes I might add. You know the deal with the rings powers, we need not rehash that. A former member of the Justice League. He was stripped of his power ring for a while but found a yellow power ring used by the former Green Lantern turned villain Sinestro. With the new yellow ring he was more powerful than ever. I won't go into the debacle that led him to being called "Warrior" for a while, but he eventually was given back his Green Lantern ring and is now one of the trainers for new recruits on the Lanterns home world of Oa. He is the first Lantern on the list of honorary Lanterns to fill in for any others who need to leave their space sector for other missions or personal reasons. Lobo is an alien mercenary and planned to be a "Wolverine" parody. His name means "he who devours your entrails and thoroughly enjoys it". "Feetals Gizz! He's a fraggin' tough bastich!" That's how he talks but I have to agree with his description of himself. Often refers to Superman as "The Big Cheese". He is the embodiment of violence. These two are as close to being friends as these two can have. They are occasional drinking buddies and have ventured together a few times. They have also fought in the past. As they have again tonight. After several hours of fighting, Gardner gets tired of pummeling Lobo to the extent he says "To frag with this." and walks away. Lobo will take a win any way he can get it. Winner by default - Lobo.

Green Lantern Alan Scott

Versus

The Question

The first and original Green Lantern Alan Scott was a little different than the rest of the Green Lanterns. While all of the Lanterns since Scott wore rings that carried a weakness to the color yellow, Scott's ring is weak against wood. He is an original member of the Justice Society, a group of heroes predating the Justice League but working in the same manner. Other than the rings weakness, this Green Lantern's power is the same as the other lanterns. An original Charlton Comics character later DC bought the rites, The Question was originally more of an activist that a hero. When not being philosophical, The Question is also known as investigative journalist Vic Sage. The lack of a face is from a chemical compound called "Pseudoderm" that he ad hears to his face. After years of smoking, he died of lung cancer during the 52 series. Winner by forfeit Alan Scott.

And our final first round match:

John Stewart Green Lantern

Versus

Cyborg

John Stewart is the second backup in the Green Lantern Corps. He is ranked after Guy Gardner in the honorary guard. He is, however, a full time member of The Justice League. His ring works like the rest of the power rings worn by other Green Lanterns. Hal Jordan has said that Stewart flies the best among all the Lanterns. Due to his architectural back round, his constructs are solid and heavier than other Lanterns. Half man - half machine; Cyborg is another member of The Teen Titans. Created by his scientist father after being maimed by another of his fathers creatures, Vic Stone's father outfitted him with experimental prosthetics of his own design. He is equipped with rocket launchers, sonic cannons, missiles, as well as a blow torch and a buzz saw. Not sure which one of them it was that took down John Stewart but Cyborg certainly did go Medieval on his heiney. Winner by knockout - Cyborg.

There you have it the first round is over and we will start to trim the field down to the Sweet 16 starting tomorrow. Or maybe Monday, it depends.

5's versus 12's

First match of the night:

Red Robin (Jason Todd)

Versus

Sandman (Wesley Dodds)

One is a hero back from the dead (not really he's Jason Todd from Earth-2. Remember the Power Girl/Supergirl/Kara Zor-El dilemma? Well we don't have the same one with Todd because his counterpart from Earth-1 was killed by the Joker. We also have the original crime fighting Sandman (not the dream lord created by Neil Gaiman) Well, unfortunately (depending on how you look at it, actually) we don't have much of a fight. Jason Todd is more of an anti-hero than he is a hero. For a while he was the Red Hood, a villain. Now he is a grown up Red Robin and he takes the fight to the aging superhero. The Grainy Gladiator is no match for Jason Todd. Maybe the fact that Wesley Dodds committed suicide back in 1999 hampers his ability to move on in this contest. Winner - Red Robin

Robin (Tim Drake)

Versus

The Phantom Stranger

I'm not really sure who or what the Phantom Stranger is. A master of the occult, I suppose. A hero, I'm not really sure but I invited him to the battle anyway. He's certainly a paranormal assistant to superheroes. He was a member of the Justice League so that qualifies him. Fallen Angel, one of God's Chosen Ones, or the original "Wandering Jew" are all ways he has been described. Guess it depends on if you follow the Judeo-Christian way of life. Now Robin, we are all familiar with, or at least know the name. He is the new "Boy Wonder" and arguably the best, although certainly not around as long as Dick Grayson. It has already been made clear that he is a far superior detective than dick Grayson was as a teenager. Drake is also a founding member of the newest version of the Teen Titans as was Grayson with a previous version the the teen aged super group. In an effort to show the fact that Tim Drake is or will be a more superior Robin, they have given him his own series and he has appeared in more graphic novels than Grayson did as Robin. It is agreed however, that Grayson is a much better hand to hand combatant but it is hinted that with age and experience this too may change in Drake's favor. However you slice it this is a classic battle. Drake proves to be a master strategist at such a young age as to go toe to toe with the Phantom Stranger. Phantom Stranger feels the call to another place as right before he disappears from the fight he looks to the sky and says "I am needed elsewhere. Carry on young hero." Winner by forfeit - Tim Drake

The Flash (Jay Garrick)

Versus

Blue Beetle

The original Flash versus the newest incarnation of the Blue Beetle. We bridge the generation gap with a battle between yesterday and tomorrow. Age has caught up with the aging speedster as he is not as fast as he once was. Youth takes it's toll on Blue Beetle's ability as he has not fully understood how to work in tandem with the alien technology inside the battle suit he wears. Both are with their faults but both are fully wanting to win this battle. Even with age slowing him down, Garrick is able to run rings around the younger hero, literally. If this battle took place two years from now, the outcome may be reversed but for now winner - The Flash by judges decision.

Finally tonight:

The Flash (Wally West)

Versus

Animal Man

Wally West, the current Flash, and potentially the best Flash to ever wear the scarlet suit against Animal Man; Buddy Baker. Animal Man is able to "borrow" power from any animal that he chooses. Originally the animals had to be in the general vicinity of Baker. However his powers recently evolved and he now is connected to the genealogy of the entire animal kingdom. Even extinct animals he is able to draw power from as well as alien life forms. In what has got to be one of the biggest upsets thus far, Animal Man is able to continue his streak of "most underrated hero" with a victory in the first round of the tournament. Winner by TKO - Animal Man

We wrap up the first round and begin narrowing down to the "Sweet 16" this weekend!

Seeds 6 versus seeds 11

It's a moonlit night here as we have more battles to present to you. Here is a recap of all this evenings action. In our first match we have two heavenly bodies going at it:

Power Girl

Versus

Starfire

Didn't we already have Kara Zor-El fight in a earlier match? Well, we did and here's another one. Yes, Power Girl is also named Kara Zor-El and is also Superman's cousin. Only this is another Kara Zor-El from another version of Earth. Earth-Two is where Power Girl comes from and the Kara Zor-El that goes by Supergirl is from Earth One, or better known to us as the earth we live on. Seeing as how we can't have or don't need two Supergirls, it's good that she goes by Power Girl. With all of that being said, Supergirl and Power Girl are, in essence, mirror images of each other, physiologically speaking. Now you see why watching Lost and understanding it isn't all that difficult for me? Starfire, a founding member of the Teen Titans is as beautiful as she is tough. Her star bolts are the equivalence of eight times the power of a lightning bolt. She is nearly fifteen times stronger than the normal woman. And against Powergirl that amounts to squattah! Power Girl in a route. Winner by knockout - Power Girl

Elongated Man

Versus

Plastic Man

Okay, why does DC comics have (or at least had) two heroes that basically had the exact powers? Here's the rundown; in 1956 DC comics bought the rights to Plastic Man from Quality Comics. In 1960 Julius Schwartz, an editor for DC, created Elongated Man to make his own version of Plastic Man. Why didn't he just begin a new Plastic Man series? He didn't know DC had bought the rights. In doing so, he created a character that millions (myself included) considered to be better than that of the Plastic Man character. Unfortunately, DC decided to kill off Elongated Man at the end of the "52" series by having him commit suicide. Therefor, I sadly have to declare the winner - Plastic Man by forfeit.

The Spectre

Versus

Kid Devil

The Spectre is and always will be Jim Corrigan to me. Hal Jordan as the Spectre was okay, the new version of the Spectre; Crispus Allen - Pshaw! It's trash. Although they did go back to the "murdered detective is the spirit of vengeance" scenario, I will give them that, it still fell far short. Kid Devil, or Eddie Bloomburg as he is known to to his family, made a deal with a demon lord named Neron (not really he was fooled into believing it) and received his powers. He's hot. Body temperature is normally around 200 degrees, and that's when he's relaxed and not angry. He spits fire like nobodies business. The Spectre was not impressed. Winner - The Spectre.

Grand Finale of the night:

Hawkgirl

Versus

Catwoman

Wow another "Female Fury" match. Leather, whips, maces, wings - crap, that's what I call a fun Saturday night. In a very close match that lasted well into the evening, Hawkgirl managed to squeak out a win. Winner by decision - Hawkgirl

Rage On

Here we go with more first round action:

Hawkman

Versus

Zatara

The warrior from Thanagar against the bratty younger cousin of Zatanna. Surprisingly Hawkman does not take it easy on the young upstart and gives him a good pounding (thankfully -ed.). After the fight is over Zatara is overheard saying "Tihs, I tog ym ssa dekcik!" He most certainly did. Winner by knockout - Hawkman.

Next up is a "Female Fury" battle:

Zatanna

Versus

Raven

Hey, ya know it just rained a whole lot here and I was wondering what to do with all of this mud. Mud Wrestling anyone? Zatanna is a whole lot more powerful than her younger cousin and has been called "one of the strongest members of the Justice League". Raven is half human and half demon. This should be a good one. Both of these combatants are willing to use their powers to warp the minds of their opponents (friends too, sometimes). We have an upset in the making as Raven hits Zatanna with a blast of her empathic mind control hurling the fishnet clad sorceress through the mud and into a brick wall. Zatanna lay motionless as Raven goes to check on her rival. Fearing Zatanna's injuries are life threatening, Raven begins to remove the pain and the damage she caused. As she is doing this, Zatanna regains consciousness and mind wipes Raven causing Raven to forget what she was doing. The results gives Zatanna the win. Winner by default - Zatanna

Nightwing (Dick Grayson)

Versus

Jade

The former "Boy Wonder" turned "Teen Titan" turned "Outsider" turned "Teen Titan" for a second tour turned ... ah forget it, you got the idea; versus the daughter of the original Green Lantern. Oh, wait, she died two years ago, now we have a new Jade. Did I mention the new Jade is a coward? Yeah, this is a no contest. Winner - Nightwing

We got ourselves another CAT FIGHT!

Supergirl

Versus

Nightshade

I don't care which version of Supergirl you want to use, one thing is for sure, she's frigging hot! Plus she's Superman's older cousin, (don't start with the younger cousin argument, she was born before Superman but held in suspended animation, so there!) with nearly the same powers as Superman. How could Nightshade possibly hope to win this one? Even with the powers of the shadow lands able to sap the strength from Supergirl by blocking out the rays of the yellow sun that gives Kara Zor-El her powers, Nightshade is no match for the "Last Daughter of Krypton". Winner by knockout - Supergirl

Round 1 Part 4

A quick update as our first round matches continue:

Firestorm

Versus

The Atom Ray Palmer

Another battle featuring a nuclear hero,

Firestorm, facing a man, Ray Palmer, who can shrink himself down to the size of an atom. Due to the fact that even at his atomic size, the Atom is still visible to Firestorm, the nuclear man is able to "freeze" Palmer's ability and render him powerless. Winner - Firestorm

Next up:

Deadman

Versus

Black Lightning

One of the best ever "supporting" character heroes in the DC universe, in my opinion against one of the first ever "major" African American hero. Black Lightning is considered a "major" hero for a reason. He is a major power and that power continues to grow. The limits of his powers even he has yet to realize as he wins this fight with the ghostly Deadman in easy fashion. Winner - Black Lightning

Now entering the combat:

Swamp Thing

Versus

Thunderbolt

This one almost seems unfair. We have the earth elemental Swamp Thing against a near rookie hero Jakeem Thunder and his "genie" from the fifth dimension. Nobody start singing "Aquarius", this is serious business. Swamp Thing almost seemed to not want to fight at the start of the battle. After receiving several bolts from the thunder genie, the elemental decides to join in whole hearted. Able to cause the little bits of salad remaining in Jakeem's stomach to suddenly grow, as Swamp Thing has full control over any plant life, Jakeem falls unconscious. Without his master to tell him what to do, the genie returns to the magic ink pen where he is stored. Again, I don't make this stuff up, the writers do. Winner - Swamp Thing

And finally, our "Female Fury" match of the day is:

Mary Marvel

Versus

Saturn Girl

In a surprise turn of events, this match is a "No Gimmick" match. Meaning it will just be a normal girl versus girl match. No bikini's, no fluffy pillows, no lacy nightgowns. What the hell? I want someone to look into this. Anyway, since I can't stop it now, I guess the battle will have to go on "as is". Mary Marvel, the worlds greatest mortal female versus Saturn Girl from the 30Th century. Saturn Girl has the ability to read minds and control them if they are weak enough. Mary Marvel is currently stronger than she has ever been. Perhaps Saturn Girl should have read my mind before the fight started cause she would have known she was going to get her ass kicked. Total count the heroes from the Legion of Superheroes are now 0 - 3. Winner - Mary Marvel.

Round 1 Continues

After taking Sunday off, our tournament to decide who is supreme in the DC Universe continues. We have eight more heroes ready to battle it out. Enough chit chat from me, let's get to the action. First up we have:

Martian Manhunter

Versus

Rorschach

As the Martian Manhunter circles his opponent the man with the ink blot face, Rorschach, just stands with his hands in the pockets of his trench coat. As J'onn J'onzz flies in for the initial attack Rorschach pulls out a can of hair spray and a lighter. A spray and a flick later an Rorschach is the first major upset winner of the tournament. Winner - Rorschach

Second battle:

Aquaman

Versus

Mr. Miracle

Another battle of ex Justice League members. The King of the Seven Seas versus the Escape Artist Scott Free. A neatly ironic name can't help Mr. Miracle in this one. Aquaman hardly breaks a sweat as he commands a hoard of sea creatures to pull Mr. Miracle into the briny depths. I can almost hear "Under the Sea" from the Little Mermaid start as this one ends rather quickly. Winner - Aquaman

Barry Allen

Versus

Kid Flash

A battle of Flash's past and Flash's future. Yes, I know that Barry Allen and Bart Allen are both dead but this tournament transcends death. Kinda like the IRS. Oh, yeah and they are also grandfather and grandson. This battle went around the globe several times before the two of them disappeared into the speed force. Last time we checked they are still there and are once again assumed dead. Decision - A draw.

Our last battle of this update:

Captain Marvel

Versus

Mr. Terrific

Is he Captain Marvel? Is he "Shazam!"? Is he DC or is he Fawcett? Well, since Fawcett was bought by DC after DC drove them out of business I guess it doesn't matter. He's a DC character named after the competition and he was sued for being a Superman rip off. He was the first live action hero on film though. Even before Superman. In fact his comic sold more copies than Superman did during the 1940's. That has to count for something right? Maybe. Mr. Terrific is the third smartest man in the world. Who's number one and two? We don't know. How much smarter than Mr. Terrific are the first two? Are they smart enough not to battle the Big Red Cheese? 'Cause if they are they wouldn't have gotten their asses handed to them as bad as Mr. Terrific did. Winner - Captain Marvel or Shazam! whatever he's going by this minute.
