Don't really see how "Sawyer is in the coffin" would have worked. Can't see how it could have answered any questions. It also would give Kate one less reason to go back.
Desmond in the coffin makes a little bit more sense than Sawyer but I still don't know how they would have sold it. Would have been a bit sad to have the reuniting scene between Desmond and Penny and then get to see Des in the coffin. I'm glad they went with Locke. I don't think their intentions were from a "we're not sure how we are progressing on this one" standpoint but rather a "let's see if they can spoil this one if we have three endings" train of thought.
As the summer vacations began to get into full swing, some have been able to catch up to Evvie Lilly and she had this message to give to all of her adoring fans:
