La Fleur

Four Toed Statues Have Nice Asses

In an episode that ranks up there with the best of the series, (that’s my opinion, anyway, and yes, I may be biased, but deal with it OK) it began with something I didn’t see coming. We got a good look at the backside of the four toed statue. After one more “earthquake” flash, as Miles described it, the flashes are done. My question: is the statue still there? They didn’t show us that did they?

10 Minutes Is All It Takes To Have A Hootenanny

Complete with a Geronimo Jackson tight t-shirt (the 70’s ruled!) we see the inside of the Dharma security center. The girl had just dropped off some brownies. Is there a Dharma pot field somewhere nearby? Horace is lighting dynamite (while holding it in his mouth, mind you!) and the security guys panic. “3 in the morning, you really want to wake up La Fleur?” Sawyer is La Fleur as we get another patented “Sonuvabitch!” and the swooshing LOST logo flashes across our screens. Sawyer stops to pick up Miles who is also in a Dharma jumpsuit. He calls Miles "Enos" which would lead me to believe Miles is the deputy to Sawyer’s sheriff role. It’s a Dukes Of Hazard reference. He also calls Horace their “fearless leader”. They bring Horace back and we meet Amy, who is very pregnant. She tells “Jim” (weird to hear him called Jim after hearing him called Sawyer and lately James, but Jim? He’s not a “Jim”) that the two of them had a fight about Paul. Sawyer jokes with Amy about Horace's drinking ending up on the island's "coconut telegraph," similar to his joke to Hurley about revealing his food stash on the island's "coconut Internet." Then she goes into labor.

A Funny Thing Happened To Me On The Way To The Beach

We go back to three years earlier and Daniel is a mess. “I’m not gonna do it. I’m not going to tell her.” Charlotte is gone. She didn’t move with the flash. He tells the rest “Whenever we are now, we’re here for good.” Which isn’t exactly true, all we need is yet another player take their turn at playing the Frozen Donkey Wheel game. Miles asks who put Sawyer in charge because for once, Sawyer is in charge. Even if it is only because Juliette allows it. She makes sure to let Sawyer know this when she tells him going back to the beach was a stupid idea. Gun shots draw their attention to an open field where two men have a woman captured. They put the obligatory Other’s bag over her head and Sawyer decides to get involved. Miles doesn’t like the idea but Daniel tells them that “whatever happened, happened” which oddly enough is the name of an upcoming episode. Usually it’s ants that interrupt a picnic but this time it was two hostiles with guns. Sawyer thinks his rifle is magical for a moment and then realizes Juliette does indeed have his back. One of the hostiles had a tattoo that looked like an upside down horseshoe. Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Watchmen, and this week Dukes of Hazard, are all good references. “You can’t possibly give us a Winnie The Pooh reference can you?”, you may ask? Maybe.

“If one is to be called a liar, one may as well make an effort to deserve the name.” - A.A Milne

Yeah, guess I can. And I apologize to Cerpts for that one, I beg your forgiveness. With another lie being told this season, Sawyer begins to perpetuate the story of how he and the rest of the group is on the island and came to Amy’s rescue. The hostiles have walkies in the 70’s? Amy tells them about a “truce” with the hostiles and that they have to bury the bodies, oh, and carry Paul back with them who is Amy’s husband and make it snappy, we got shit to do. Sawyer tells Miles he used to lie for a living so they should all let him do the talking. Juliette stops Daniel from walking into the sonic fence and tells Amy to turn it off. I will give Amy the benefit of the doubt here, she was rattled and frightened so to not trust these new people isn’t that had to believe. Give her credit in that she did turn the fences’ juice down a few notches. We see that ear plugs can protect you from the sonic fence, I wonder if Mikhail was deaf or at least hard of hearing and that explains him making it through the fence when Locke shoved him through it.

Son Of A Breech

Back to Amy going into labor. She and Horace are now married and nobody can deliver the baby because Dharma didn’t think that far ahead and actually had someone on the island that could do that. (Really Dharma?) Especially if it’s a breech birth. Sawyer is so cute he didn’t know what that means. “I like ’em big and stupid! I like ’em big and real dumb!” That’s a Julie Brown reference by the way. Sawyer runs to Juliette who is now a grease monkey in the Dharma motor pool apparently. She is convinced that she can’t help and is a jinx when it comes to women having babies. Sawyer convinces her otherwise. The doctor is all “What? How do you know all that medical stuff? Didn’t you fix my Dharma Volkswagen a week ago?” Jin has been hooked on phonics and his English sounds real sweet. He has also been looking for the O6 the past three years as well. “It’s a boy!”, Juliette tells Sawyer and Jin. Gotta love those dimples!

I’m In Love With The Little Red-Headed Girl

Sawyer wakes up in the Dharma game room where the Others held Kate a while back. Sawyer continues the La Fleur lie and he has just enough information to do it. He says he was the captain of a salvage vessel that crashed on the island while they were looking for the Black Rock. Horace isn’t as good of a liar as Sawyer as he has to look away when he tells Sawyer he had never heard of the Black Rock. Either it was a lie or he found it later as it looked like the dynamite he was using in the beginning of the episode probably came from the Black Rock. He tells Sawyer that the group will be leaving the island in the morning on the submarine since they are "not Dharma material". Meanwhile, outside Juliette tells the rest of the group that she used to live in these same barracks. Daniel says they are on the right record but the wrong song. Then Daniel sees a very young Charlotte on the island, (even if it is a continuity error, just go with that it might be her) she even pauses for a moment to wave at Daniel. My heart broke a little bit for the nerdy professor. Sawyer tells the group they are leaving in the morning and the warning siren blares the approach of Richard Alpert. The house they ran them into looked like the same house that Sawyer/Locke/Hurley/Ben were in when Keamy and the rest of the freighter goons were attacking.

Maybe It’s Maybelline
Horace goes out to talk to Richard who tells Horace that the fence can’t keep “us” out but it might keep other things out. So Richard might know what the smoke monster is but does Horace and the rest of Dharma? Horace tells the other security guy to go to the Arrow station and to bring the “Heavy Ordinance” and to turn the fence to maximum levels. Sawyer tells Horace that he wants to talk to his friend with the eyeliner. The writers really do read the LOST blogs! Sawyer tells Richard why he killed Richards’ men. Then he blows Richard’s mind when he asks him about the Jughead bomb and that he knows about Locke’s visit to him. The deal to give Richard Paul’s body was harsh but necessary. Amy takes an ankh necklace from around Paul’s neck before she says goodbye. The end result is Horace gives Sawyer a two week window of opportunity to look for the rest of his crew.

Sittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay
Juliette tells Sawyer that she is going back to the mainland on the sub. Sawyer asks her to stay; “What about me? Who’s gonna get my back?” Juliette was gorgeous in this scene which was one of my favorites of the episode. Juliette agrees to give Sawyer two weeks. And three years later Sawyer has sideburns, a sweet paisley shirt and some love in his giddy up. Sawyer, Juliet, Jin, Miles, and Daniel have been living a lie for three years, just as the Oceanic 6 have off of the island. Sawyer, the career criminal, is now head of security. In "The Long Con," Sawyer referred to himself as the "New Sheriff in Town". Seems this wasn’t as much irony as foreshadowing. Sawyer and Juliette have been playing house. The two of them exchanging “I love you”s can mean only one thing: Kate’s back in the next scene

Lovely To See You Again My Friend
Horace wakes up and Sawyer tells him about his baby being born. In 1974, when Sawyer wakes up from the sonic fence incident, Horace asks him "How's your head?" and Sawyer replies, "It hurts." In 1977, when Horace wakes up from his drinking binge, Sawyer asks him "How's your head?" and Horace replies, "It hurts." Horace tells Sawyer about the argument he had with Amy that caused him to go on a bender. The argument was over the necklace that Horace found in Amy’s sock draw. That’s what you get for wearing women’s socks dude! It was the same necklace that Amy took from Paul. “Is three years long enough to get over somebody?”, Horace asks. Sawyer tells Horace his Kate story and says that three years is long enough to get over someone. Three years is long enough if that person they are trying to get over is dead, but what if they are alive and well and back into your life? Guess we will get to test Sawyer’s theory. In the morning the phone rings and Sawyer answers it. Jin has found their group of friends and Sawyer already goes into old Sawyer mode and doesn’t tell Juliette the whole truth. He only tells her that it was Jin and that he has to go. Sawyer has a nice Dharma Jeep now, no stupid clunky vans for him, and the reunion that I thought we wouldn’t see until next season or at least this seasons finale, is about to happen. Jack seems to be happy to see Sawyer, and Sawyer looks happy as well. Hurley is still taken aback by all that he has since returning to the island; Jin and now Sawyer in Dharma jumpsuits. As Kate comes into view Sawyer is instantly conflicted. Fade to black.

Now Let Me Edificate You All On A Few Things
The ankh: The Egyptian symbol of eternal life and fertility. Egyptian gods are often portrayed carrying it by its loop, or bearing one in each hand with arms crossed over their chest. The giant statue appears to be holding one in each hand. The statue could be Anubis, the Egyptian god of the dead. To what extent does this statue imply in the reality of the island? Dead people continue to appear on the island and some who die appear unable to stay dead? In mythology, Anubis was charged with determining if someone who died was worthy to enter the realm of the dead, could this statue imply something about those who continue to appear on the island after they die? What could this statue mean for John Locke who appears unable to stay dead? Seeing as how the statue is one of the great questions of LOST, and it made a huge appearance this episode, I will be doing a post dedicated solely to the statue and it’s appearance in this episode in the next few days.

Phil and Jerry, two brownie eating 1970s hippies, seem to be references to Phil Lesh and Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead. Rosie may be a reference to the reoccurring symbol of roses in Grateful Dead songs and art. In "Ramble On Rose", the protagonist's name is Rose. The name Grateful Dead has also been attributed to this quote : "We now return our souls to the creator, as we stand on the edge of eternal darkness. Let our chant fill the void in order that others may know. In the land of the night the ship of the sun is drawn by the grateful dead." -Egyptian Book of the Dead. Anubis (a jackal-headed god) was an ancient Egyptian god of the underworld who guided and protected the spirits of the dead....or the "grateful dead". The Grateful Dead played three concerts in Egypt in their thirty-year history, September 14, 15, and 16, 1978. The shows were performed very close to the Sphinx (Hurley’s drawing in The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham) and the Great Pyramid.

Another excellent dissection of an episode. It was a great episode but I can't say it was one of the best ever. This probably due to the fact that I find the 1970's Dharma Initiative lame and a bunch of losers. i don't mean "lame" as in a plot device or scriptwise -- I think they are deliberately SUPPOSED to be lame -- i.e. Paolo and Whatserface. They're all a bunch of hippies and I can't wait till they get gassed to death!!! Yay!!! I find their entire granola-eating, touchy-feelie, new age wicker-chair-sittin'ness to be trying to disguise a real fascistic regimented society.

And no sir. . .I don't like it.

Bring on the poison gas, Ben!!!

But again, I think TPTB wrote them deliberately that way and I don't mean to suggest it's a failing of the script or plot for the series. Theys just lame. I think that's what we're supposed to think since they're really the "odd men out" so to speak because they apparently aren't connected to Widmore or Ben or, obviously, Richard Alpert. I'm right when I say that young 1954 Widmore was in the same bunch as "Jughead era" Richard Alpert and then Richard Alpert in the 70's is with the "Hostiles" outside the Dharma "sonic fence" and then Richard Alpert (with long shaggy hair) brings young Ben Linus over to his side and then older Ben poison gasses the Dharma Initiative and then Ben's in charge of the "Others" when flight 815 crashes. Has I gots all dis right?!?!?!? So what I'm saying is that Richard Alpert, Charles Widmore and Benjamin Linus is all from the same side against the Dharma Initiative?

One thing: I don't understand why you said "little girl Charlotte" is a continuity error. Could you explain please? I must be missing something. It can't be because she shouldn't be there because I recall she said she left the island when she was 9 and the little red-haired girl was obviously younger than 9. Clarify, oh magnificent one.

Oh and before you mention it. . .

I do realize that "The Others" -- at least under Benjamin Linus -- could also be described as something of a "fascistic regimented society" as well. However, I like dem better because they've got styyyyyyyyyyle!

And you still haven't commented on Nadia being alive.

Cheeks DaBelly said...

Whatchoo mean Nadia being alive?

What I mean about the continuity error is it is 1974 when Daniel sees Charlotte as a little girl on the island and I'm guessing her age to be about three so that makes her year of birth 1970 ish. Ben, when reciting her biography ("Confirmed Dead") stated she was born July 2, 1979. I'm assuming that Ben's information was right because it always seems to be.

Now if you want an even bigger continuity error and one easily fixed if they would just pay attention to the details is take another look at the episode and see how many times Sawyer's beard growth changes in the pre Dharma scenes. Silliness!

and you assumption of where Widmore fits into the hierarchy is correct he is with Alpert and his group but the question is exactly when was he tricked into being "exiled" from the island from Ben? This is something we will have to wait and see.

And I want to know why we see Horace with Amy and when he finds Roger Linus carrying a newly born Ben somewhere near Portland he is with a woman named Olivia? Since Sawyer saved Amy was she supposed to die and since she lived and then had a baby has thigs been changed? But I thought Whatever happened, happened? See this is where we run into problems with time travel paradoxesesses.

Cerpts said...

I repeat -- So can we assume that Nadia was not actually murdered but her death was faked? Since it certainly appeared to me like she was standing at Locke's bedside as he was getting his broken leg set (and after we glimpse Abaddon standing there as well). It sure looks like Nadia to me -- right before Locke passes out. This would obviously also make her one of Widmore's people (since she's with them in Tunisia) and her faked death a ploy by Widmore to turn Sayid against Ben. Since the first place Locke goes is to see Sayid doing his Habitat for Humanity schtick, Nadia would obviously be alive AFTER her supposed death. As I say, it sure looks exactly like Nadia to me -- didnja see her?!?

Dude I think that's just some random woman wearing a salmon colored burka. But if it does turn out to be her I will be stealing it and posting it myself on other blogs and giving you zip credit. 'Cause dat's how I roll!

Cerpts said...

I dunno. I've seen it twice and, while I didn't free-frame the on demand thingy, it sure looks like her. And they make a point of focusing on her for a split second deliberately before Locke loses consciousness and the picture blurs over.

Cerpts said...

OK on closer inspection (I freeze framed the beeyotch), I'm not sure it was Nadia. It could be but if it is, she looks terrible. But it may actually just be some random babooshka wearing lady. In that case, I don't really understand why she was filmed in such a way as to make her seem significant.

I don't know sometimes they try to draw attention to or away from something so much we start reading more into that there actually is.
